The Great Shakeout and Disaster/Safety Drill on October 23

As we prepare for our Safety drill on October 23, 2024, we are asking families to help us build our emergency classroom bins with comfort food and drinks. We are asking students from each class to bring a pack of 12/24 individually wrapped items as assigned by the class below. These items are sorted and placed in our Emergency Classroom Bins to replace expired items. Bring these items by October 16, 2024:

TK: Individual packs of goldfish

Kindergarten: boxed juice

Grade 1: fruit cups

Grade 2: cheese cracker packs

Grade 3: granola bars

Grade 4: fruit roll ups

Grade 5: apple sauce

Grade 6: boxed juice

Grade 7: graham crackers

Grade 8: hard candy

No time to purchase an item? Opt out of shopping through the Incidental Fee in our app or click here by paying $10 per student. The items will be purchased in time for the disaster drill and the any accumulated extra funds will be placed in our Disaster Fee account. Indicate in the explanation "Emergency Bin, Grade, Name of Student."

Details about our drill are below:

All across California on October 17 at 10:20 a.m. businesses and schools participate in the Great Shakeout preparing for the inevitable earthquake. We are practicing a week later. On Wednesday, October 23, beginning at 1:30 p.m. and ending at 2:15 p.m., we will have our Safety Emergency Dismissal Drill. This drill is a part of our Emergency Preparedness Plan. I ask that you read this plan if you have any questions about emergency preparedness.

Families should use this timeline to pick up their child:

  1. 1:35 - 1:45: Families with last names A - F
  2. 1:45 - 1:55: Families with last names G - M
  3. 1:55 - 2:05: Families with last names N - T
  4. 2:05 - 2:15: Families with last names U - Z

This drill is established to practice reuniting students safely to their parent/guardian or adult assigned by their parent/guardian. While there are many emergency drills that we do monthly, annually, and every two years including fire drills, intruder drills, and shelter-in-place drills, on Oct. 23, we will practice our yearly earthquake drill. Students will practice duck, cover, and hold, will evacuate to our safe on-site location, and will wait to be reunited with family or those listed on our emergency contact list. As we prepare for this drill, I ask that you:

  • Park offsite and walk into our parish lot. Be mindful of our neighbors and park legally without blocking driveways.
  • Leave our parish parking lot clear to allow for parents/guardians with mobility needs access to closer parking spots.
  • Please be patient, we will move as safely and efficiently as possible. Allow for about 15 - 20 minutes for the pick up to be completed.
  • Be mindful of our neighbors and fellow school families.
  • Gather at the rectory sidewalk on Fulton Avenue near the Kindergarten play yard. This is our ONLY access point. School Street will NOT be open.
  • As this is an outdoor drill, prepare your student with water, hats/shade, and sunscreen. They are also encouraged to have a book to read while waiting for the emergency pick up.
  • Be sure whomever is signing your student out has their name on your student’s emergency list and they have a picture identification card.
  • Once your student has been signed out and is with you, please calmly exit the yard through the walk-in gate near the flagpole.
  • If you are immediately signing your student into Extended Care, walk your student directly to the Small Hall to sign them in with Extended Care staff.

Information for you to know:

  • As you enter the walk-in gate near the kindergarten play yard, you will meet Ms. Seto and Mrs. Viviani at the check-in table.
  • State the student(s) name to be dismissed and your name to check against the emergency dismissal list.
  • A student leader in SLT or Campus Ministry will be assigned to gather your student(s) and bring them to our reunification table.
  • Proceed to the reunification table for sign out.
  • Exit with your student at the walk-in gate by the flagpole
  • All students remaining will be escorted to Extended Care.
  • There will be no Children's Choir Practice on October 23.

Important consideration: This important drill needs to be completed every two years. We hope to have all families participate in this drill as it helps us all understand how to come to our campus after an event. Having an emergency contact/parent participate in the process of picking up your student(s) this year, even if they drop them off at Extended Care afterward, is a great way to know how it all works during an emergency. Thank you for your understanding and participation.
