Halloween Costume Expectations

It is time to think about Halloween celebrations. Assumption School has guidelines we hope will promote community and respect. Remind your students of their audience in the school (students, teachers, parents, community members). This is a TK-8 school—what may be appropriate in pop culture or the media may not be appropriate for a place of learning. We are a community, and we want students to think about how their costume choice may impact others within this community. Thank you for taking the time to help our students understand these guidelines.

  • The costume must be modest and follow all free dress rules, including appropriate skirt and short length
  • The costume must be safe. Wearing it must not pose any danger or injury to the student or to anyone coming into contact with the costume.
  • Masks may be worn during the parade, but must be removed for the rest of the day.
  • The costume may not promote or endorse the use of drugs (including tobacco) or alcohol.
  • Costumes that imitate the garb of priests, nuns or other religious vocations are not
    appropriate for school events.
  • Props must not be physically harmful in anyway, cannot be a weapon or imitate weapons
    (guns, swords, etc.)
  • Costumes cannot be disrespectful to the Catholic Church or its teachings.
  • Costumes may not be offensive or inappropriate. Perpetuating a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, ethnicity, heritage, or religion will not be permitted.

At the end of the parade students are required to place any head coverings, props, or excessive clothing into their backpack or separate bag and stored in their classroom. For the remainder of the day, students may continue wearing clothing (pants, shirt, dress, etc...) original to the costume, however it should not interfere with their ability to interact and learn as a student. For example, students must be able to use the restroom, participate in physical education, work in groups, etc.  Teachers and school administrators will observe students as they arrive to school and supervise during the parade. Students who fail to meet expectations for the parade or the remainder of the day will be required to change into uniform clothing. If the main office does not have proper uniform sizes for students who do not meet costume expectations, parents will be contacted to bring appropriate uniform clothing to school.
