4th Grade visits BOD's Living Lab

Worm bins, chicken coops and transplanting, oh my! Those are things the 4th Grade students experienced on their field trip to Bishop O’Dowd High School’s Living Lab.

This is O’Dowd’s “…four-acre outdoor classroom, native plant community, certified wildlife habitat, and sustainable garden." Since 4th Grade is Assumption School’s green team, it was a perfect opportunity for them to meet with Bishop O’Dowd’s green team, the high school senior eco leaders.

After introductions, they headed to the vegetable garden to discuss the day. The 4th Graders were matched up with an eco leader and participated in three fun stations. First, they learned how a worm bin works and how this process benefits a garden. Next, they visited the large flock of hens in the chicken coop. Many chickens were lovely, held and fed by the students. And finally, they transplanted small zinnia seedlings to take home.

This was a wonderful experience, full of fun and learning! Thank you O’Dowd for inviting us.
