San Leandro, CA – In a year marked by record-setting consumer shopping, the kids at Assumption
School turned consumerism on its head, using Christmas purchases as a way to help others in need.
For over 25 years, the school has been raising funds for Davis Street Family Resource Center. This
year they raised a record high of $12,000 through the St. Nick’s Boutique and Virtual Auction, funding
hot breakfast for low-income preschoolers for the next 4 years.
Started by former Assumption parent Brian Copeland, the St. Nick’s Boutique has been a long-standing
tradition at Assumption School and has been a way for students to directly impact their community.
Families donated gently used items to be auctioned off or sold at the boutique. Other students and
parents raised money to purchase additional auction items by selling cookies and plant arrangements.
Then, on the day of the event, students delighted in attending the boutique and picking out gifts for
mom, dad, and grandma—in a rare opportunity to shop for themselves. The St. Nick’s Boutique
embodies both the spirit of giving and joy. As Phuong Hathaway, one of the funding-raising organizers
described it, the event’s success is “a true labor of love” by the community.
