San Leandro, CA – It was a momentous weekend for Assumption School. Lorena Arroyo and Katherine Greenberg, organizers of the School’s annual Fall festival and parents to Assumption students, recreated the weekend festival successfully achieving the small-knit, community feel that festival goers cherish every year, while ensuring Alameda County guidelines were met. The festival kicked off on the same day the school submitted its reopening plan to Alameda County for consideration as part of the school waiver process that allows qualifying elementary schools to reopen.
The festival began on Friday, September 18 with a ‘grab n go’ traditional spaghetti dinner followed by a virtual talent show streamed into the living rooms of Assumption families. On the following night, a giant outdoor movie screen played ‘A Night at the Museum’, while attendees indulged in Filipino food, hot dogs, and wine and beer for adults from inside of their cars. Lucky recipients were the winners of a 50/50 raffle, and several other themed gift baskets, including a Golf Extravaganza and an Outdoor Dining Delight themed basket.
Parent volunteers helped make the event a success, to which several of those volunteers worked as greeters and parking attendants on both nights to ensure County guidelines could be met and that families felt safe. From start to finish, the weekend brought a feeling of community that has kept Assumption families coming back to the festival for generations.
Principal Lana Rocheford reports that the festival exceeded its fundraising goal of $12,000, which will benefit educational programs and the implementation of safety measures that will aid in the school’s reopening. “It’s a rallying cry for our community,” she says.
